Why should you have a foreign driving license translated?
As the holder of a foreign driving license that does not originate from an EU country, you should always have your driving license translated. If you stay in Germany for more than six months, your foreign driver's license will no longer be recognized as a valid driver's license. You will therefore be driving without a license, which is a criminal offence in Germany and can be punished with expensive fines.
- The translation is generally mandatory for all driving licences that were not issued by an EU state or a country belonging to the European Economic Area. However, this requirement only applies to persons who have been staying in Germany for longer than six months and have already registered a permanent residence.
- To obtain a German driving licence, first, you will have to get your driving licence transferred. Depending on your driving licence, it may also be necessary for you to take an additional theoretical or practical driving test. Therefore, the complete transfer of your driving licence can take up to 2 months.
- Yes! But not forever. Holders of foreign driving licences are allowed to use them in road traffic in Germany for the first six months of their stay. The validity of the driving licence expires six months after you register a permanent residence, after which it is mandatory to have the licence translated and classified.

- A third party can also collect your documents from the ADAC office. The power of attorney must be filled in completely and signed. Your original driving licence and, if applicable, the certified translation of the driving licence (only necessary if you have chosen the pure classification service) must be brought along and presented when collecting the documents. In addition, the original identity card or passport of the applicant and the authorised representative must be presented to the ADAC office for legitimation.
